Do rap beefs mean anything anymore?
"A Hip Hop beef is grown men writing poems to each other"

No seriously. I’ll be the first to say that I am not the hip-hop expert that I pretended to be in 2018. I learned the hard way that sometimes we just have better ears for certain genres, and I learned that the hard way when I press shuffle. Why am I bringing this up? Because I just sat through about 60% of Drake’s most recent effort “Iceman”. Yeah, I’ll listen to Drake here and there. Sure he’s a weirdo, but I doubt me not giving him the 20 cents he would make by not streaming his THREE albums is going to change that. I also kind of have a soft spot for that early (self-aware?) Drake that shows up on So Far Gone through Nothing Was the Same but at some point after Views, something just…happened and I literally have no idea what. I think at some point he needed to maximize profits and took one look at the CD days where albums were 1 hour+ long and decided to apply that to streaming. It’s genius really. But it made listening to his albums a chore if I'm being honest.
Anyway, the reason why I bring this up is because I was consumed by the beef he had with Kendrick Lamar in 2024. I remember all of it, the breakdowns on Youtube, that weird Ebony prince account on Twitter that posted that eerie ass image.
That whole part of the saga was kind of stupid. Then Kendrick dropped GNX, stared diabolically at the camera while saying Drake likes 'em young, had Serena Williams crip walking (which is a bag of worms in and of itself), playing the superbowl, and winning all the Grammy's. Sure it was fun as hell to watch, but did it really have an effect on Drake’s career? Outside of the music nerd circles calling it bad…I mean it’s doing numbers.
And before any of you bring up Eminem and MGK, he was already gonna cross over and both disses were bad. Iceman was a Drake album with decent samples and I’m sure there are disses and references to the beef but I just don’t care enough at this point. You’re welcome for my 20 cents Aubrey, maybe you can get a stamp or something.
